Well, I came upon this site on Digg yesterday, where a guy listed a series of games he thought needed sequels. I didn’t know a single of those games, so I was sort of pissed off. Stupid bugger.
Whatever the case, my point is that some other recent games would make fine sequels if anybody looked into them. Rather than rolling out more of those crappy FPS games and multitudes of RPG sequels, the game industry would do well with these.
Clive Barker’s Undying
Yeah, that was a great game. Surreal, creepy and just plain unique. I doubt if a game like Undying was ever made before, because Undying is the scariest gaming experience I’ve ever had. If they made a sequel on this, it would be really cool. The graphics of Unreal 3 Engine could power it (the first one was based off Unreal 1). The game’s ending was left open for sequels as well, so there’s no problem with the storyline itself and Patrick didn’t look like was too old, either…
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Invisible War was a failure. It sucked in comparison to the original Deus Ex. But, it was a graphical masterpiece. It’s graphics and physics owned all the other games at the time and the only comparable game I saw was Doom 3 and it’s engine, which debuted a year later. Plus, the storyline of IW didn’t feel complete. The game seemed short and not as fulfilling as Deus Ex. IMO, if Ion Storm hadn’t been terminated, it would have delivered an awesome game, comparable to the original Deus Ex itself.
Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Maybe its game mechanics were clichéd, but the game was not. It packed a massive, vibrant world. Top of the line graphics and sound, and a beautifully crafted storyline. It could have well spawned a series of games rivalling Final Fantasy.
Star Wars: Republic Commando
It was fast, zippy and slick. Plus, it left the game at a cliffhanger. It was cool and critically well-acclaimed. It would have been fantastic to see a sequel, or maybe even an expansion pack to the game. The Delta Squad is a pack of characters too memorable to be forgotten so soon. God, if only those Imperial Commando rumours were true…
Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy
IMO, the Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy franchises should be branched off. Jedi Academy should be an Oblivion-like MMORPG, or maybe just a SPRPG. It would a lot of potential there, as compared to that stupid Star Wars Galaxies. While at Jedi Knight, LA should continue the adventures of Kyle Katarn. You just can’t get enough of that salty Jedi!
Age of Empires II
No, I’m not talking about Age of Empires III here. IMO, AoE3 was an absolutely undeserving game. it was simplified, monotonous and just too boring. It’s presentation was top-class, but it deviated from the roots and the essence, the very spirit of AoE. If Ensemble could roll out a real AoE game, or at-least not screw up Halo Wars, I’d be happy.
